European doctors call on MEPs to adopt agreement on European Health Data Space

Ahead of the ENVI-LIBE Joint Committee meeting in the European Parliament on 9 April, the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) has issued a voting recommendation urging MEPs to formally adopt the provisional agreement on the European Health Data Space resulting from the interinstitutional negotiations in mid-March 2024.

The complex file and the intense negotiations have led to an overall balanced text in a fragmented legal landscape. We welcome the staged approach to the implementation of the regulation as well as the commitment to involve direct users in the implementation process, namely healthcare professionals and patients.

During implementation, safeguarding the key ethical principles of patient confidentiality and professional secrecy, and the preservation of trust in the patient-doctor relationship, when personal electronic health data is to be processed, must be a priority.

European doctors remain hopeful that the EHDS will not overburden healthcare professionals with digital administrative tasks and increased costs. However, the implementation of the additional obligations for healthcare professionals in primary and secondary use regime remain a concern.
