In her editorial, CPME Vice-President Dr Jacqueline Rossant-Lumbroso examines a defining moment for Europe’s future in digital health. She highlights the need to uphold patient safety and trust as Europe revises its digital rules.

An interview with MEP Michael McNamara, Vice Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, examines the choices facing EU policymakers on online safety, artificial intelligence and personal data protection. In addition, a report of the members’ conference from CPME’s Spring General Assembly explores concerns about social media, online pornography and gambling.

Dr Klaus Reinhardt, President of the German Medical Association, calls for stronger protection of children and young people from addictive online platforms. His contribution draws parallels with tobacco and nicotine products, highlighting the need for action against commercial practices that put young people’s health at risk. Developing this discussion, CPME Senior EU Policy Adviser Markus Kujawa examines the rocky road to modernising EU tobacco legislation and the obstacles to delivering stronger protection.

MEP Stine Bosse, Vice Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Public Health, contributes a guest article arguing that access to medicines depends on European action on research, clinical trials and manufacturing. Jorge Batista of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union also examines how doctors and pharmacists work together to maintain continuity of care during shortages.

The message from CPME President Dr Ole Johan Bakke urges the European Commission to translate Parliament’s call for a comprehensive health workforce strategy into the coordinated action that Europe’s patients and health workforce so desperately needs.
