CPME calls on the Greek government to ensure the independence of the Panhellenic Medical Association

CPME understands that a new legislative measure is to be introduced to grant the Minister of Health the power to appoint a temporary administration to the Panhellenic Medical Association for up to 9 months, thereby replacing elected representatives of the profession. It is not clear when this mechanism could be triggered.

CPME is greatly concerned at this measure. We underline the importance of safeguarding the independent and democratic representation of the medical profession and its autonomy, not only to the benefit doctors, but also patient care, as well as the health system and society as a whole.

Trust between patients and doctors can only exist if the profession’s autonomy is real. Doctors in Europe must be enabled to practice free from undue interference of politics, administration, economy or insurances. This also extends to the national medical associations. We furthermore observe that the existence of robust organisations representing the medical profession strengthens democracy.

During the CPME General Assembly in Athens in October 2025, we witnessed the commitment of the Panhellenic Medical Association to defending medical ethics and its vision for the future of patient care in Greece and beyond. CPME therefore stands with its Greek colleagues in their efforts to defend the independence of the medical profession and the Panhellenic Medical Association. CPME strongly opposes the legislative changes proposed and calls upon the Greek government to rescind the measure to restore the independence of the Panhellenic Medical Association.

We trust that a dialogue with the Panhellenic Medical Association will be sought to find a speedy resolution. CPME offers its support to such a process and will monitor developments.
