Brussels, 31 January 2017 – Further to a public statement of the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) stressing that war is a public health problem and calling for peace last week, its leaders have been confronted to a campaign of intimidation and threats.

On Monday 29th of January, the Turkish Min. of Int. Affairs filed a criminal complaint against TMA and the head prosecutor of Ankara opened an investigation. In addition, the Min. of Health filed a lawsuit, demanding all TMA’s Central Council members to be dismissed from their position on the ground that they are acting beyond the scope of mission of TMA. Yesterday morning, the 11 members of the Central Council of TMA were arrested and TMA’s office has been searched.

The Standing Committee of European Doctors together with the global medical community sent a letter to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to ask for immediate release of the physician leaders and the end this campaign of intimidation which contravenes Turkey’s humanitarian and human rights obligations, including the right to health, freedom of association and expression.
