CPME Newsletter – Issue 26, June 2018Comments Off on CPME Newsletter – Issue 26, June 2018

Welcome to the 26th edition of the CPME newsletter.

This issue presents, among many other important topics, a feature article by Commissioner Dr Vytenis Andriukaitis on the future of health in the next EU budget. On 2 May 2018, the European Commission issued a proposal for the next long-term EU budget, which does not foresee any specific financing tool for all EU initiatives in the health sector, but allocates health to the European Social Fund. CPME fears that with this approach health policy will be diluted and governed by bodies other than a Directorate for Health. We therefore urge the European Commission to clarify the policy governance and to maintain a dedicated Directorate for Health with full responsibility for EU health policies.

Furthermore, you will find a spotlight on the proposed Regulation on Health Technology Assessment (HTA) with parallel interviews of MEP Soledad Cabezón Ruiz, MEP Françoise Grossetête and MEP Dr Peter Liese commenting on the ongoing negotiations. HTA cooperation at EU level has the potential to enhance evidence-based decisions on new drugs and medical technologies. To reach that objective, CPME asks for the highest scientific and clinical standards and strict rules on independence and transparency to be put up front.

Finally, five CPME members and other stakeholders in the health sector report on their current policies and priorities.
